Have You Ever Met a Magician?

“After high school, I went away to college and got an English degree, so I could be a teacher. I read this essay one time about an English teacher. Whenever somebody asked him about his job, he would say he taught a course in magic. That made sense to me. Still does. He taught that words and books are like magic.” I took a picture of that article on my phone and still have it. Ironically, a few days later I saw my sixth-grade English teacher, Mrs. McLean, and those words rang true. She changed my life. She instilled a love of learning. It was magic.

Several days later, I saw the article above and emailed it to her. She responded, “This is probably the kindest gift I have ever received.”

As the school year begins, remember teachers who changed your lives. Let us remember that theirs is not simply an occupation but a vocation. The difference? An occupation is a job you do to make money. A vocation is a deep sense of calling or purpose. Let us thank God for the magicians who change lives… and thank them.
