Like a Morning Cup of Coffee
Over the years, I have ended up with as many coffee cups as I have college t-shirts and phone chargers. Unlike phone chargers many don’t fit the device I need to charge at the time. Coffee cups all serve the same purpose- to hold coffee. (I don’t drink hot tea or hot chocolate.) My cups were either stolen or given to me by my children. If I arrive at one of our kids’ houses, in Kings Mountain or Kingstree and there is not one of my favorite coffee cups, I am not a happy camper. I need a good, strong black coffee.
This week, upon the death of my dad, I have needed more than a good coffee filled in a favorite cup. I have needed to feel the extreme comfort of being held by a loving God and claiming his promise, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” With my mom, with Eva and our family, we have felt God in our midst. Be it listening to mom’s story of their seventy-two years of marriage or the trials of raising three children. How mom and dad loved their six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, we spoke of glimpses of God in all of them. Different stories, in different times, in different places, yet like coffee, all comforting, even more when you are sipping out of a coffee cup that carries memories.
My morning coffee is normally shared with Eva. This week, the people I have enjoyed my coffee with have grown with family and friends. And you, though not face to face, I felt knowing your prayers for my mom, me, Eva and the rest of our family, that was more important than my morning coffee. In the weeks and months to come, when I’m drinking coffee with my mom, Eva, our kids and you, I will give thanks for holding me like a warm cup of coffee and I will give thanks for sharing something precious- a loving community.
Cheers, David
