Seeds
It’s almost Springtime, so that means it’s almost planting season. In preparation some of you have been cleaning out your gardens, fertilizing the soil, and preparing it for an abundant yield. If you know anything about gardening you know that the more time you take to cultivate the soil – clearing out the rocks, weeds, and thorns, adding nutrients, and tilling – the better your chances are for a bountiful harvest. It’s the same with faith. God, “the Extravagant Sower,” as Barbara Brown Taylor calls him, generously slings seeds far and wide. And the soil upon which it lands determines whether it sprouts, grows, withers, or produces a garden full of veggies. In Matthew’s parable (Mat. 13:2-23) of the Good Sower as individuals, we are the seeds and the soil upon which we land has an impact on how we grow and thrive as believers. Soil that has been cleared of the distractions of the world and fertilized with God’s Word and God’s faithful servants is soil that produces the good and abundant fruits of new disciples. Sunday, in worship, it was evident that Williamsburg Presbyterian Church has a long and healthy history of rich, life-giving soil. Wendy Johnson and Jamie Stillinger shared ways that this church nurtured and cultivated their seeds of faith throughout their lives. Now, as adults, not only do we see the results of that abundant yield, but we know that their faith is nurturing new seeds, younger seeds, searching seeds through their witness. If you were not able to attend worship, I encourage you to watch it on the church Facebook page or on YouTube. It will warm your heart to hear how God and God’s faithful have been and continue to be at work cultivating seeds and rejoicing as they grow. Thanks be to you rich soil, for remaining in God’s Word and trusting in God’s Holy Spirit.
Peace, Josie
