Music gives us the unique ability to express our feelings and our thoughts. For instance, energy and movement in a piece of music with lively sharp notes sounds joyful, while a slower piece with minor chords reflects a more somber, reflective tone. Hearing music enhances our worship and can help us to feel more deeply as we experience God more fully.
This Sunday in worship we will gather at 10:00 a.m. in Grace Hall for a casual service focused on Christmas. We will sing some of our favorite carols and enjoy the joyful music of the Christmas season. Why? Because every Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ! Every Sunday is a reason to celebrate the joy we know through our Savior! And in these days when the world is weary, it is good to know and feel joy.
Not only do we celebrate the joy of knowing Christ, but we have reason to celebrate the joy of the music ministry of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Endorsed by the Session, the Search Committee for the Music Director is excited to report that they have hired Dequan LeSane to be the Organist and lead the choir. He is a talented, enthusiastic lover of music ready to share his gifts with all of you! His first Sunday will be August 4th. You can find his Bio in the Binder and the Committee will share more information about him when he is introduced in worship. Thinking about wonderful music that touches our souls through worship makes me mindful of one of my favorite hymns, When in Our Music God is Glorified. The lyrics are listed below:
When in our music God is glorified and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried, Alleluia!
How often, making music, we have found a new dimension in the world of sound, as worship moved us to a more profound, Alleluia!
So has the church, in liturgy and song, in faith and love, through centuries been wrong, borne witness to the truth in every tongue: Alleluia!
And did not Jesus sing a psalm that night when utmost evil strove against the light? Then let us sing, for whole he won the fight: Alleluia!
Let every instrument be tuned in praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always: Alleluia!
Peace, Josie
