All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten
In 1986, Robert Fulghum wrote the widely popular book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. The premise is just as the title implies. Fulghum says, “Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the sand pile…” In kindergarten you learn to share, put things back where you found them, say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody, and wash your hands before you eat. You learn to live a balanced life- learn, think, and be creative every day, take a nap each afternoon, and when you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. Kindergartens teach the basics for living together and enjoying a healthy productive life, however, only certain kindergartens teach you the Golden Rule, show you what it means to love one another, and teach you stories and songs about the Bible that will stick with you for life. For 58 years, Williamsburg Presbyterian Church Kindergarten has been THAT kindergarten. Through a vision that began with Mamie Cooper and Grace Douglas, then continued through Judy Hall, Judy Tisdale, and Jennifer McKenzie, WPC Kindergarten has been stalwart in exhibiting the kingdom of God to children in Williamsburg county. These women have helped children to prepare for life with a good foundation in the Good News of Jesus Christ; a foundation that will last a lifetime.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that “there is a time for everything, a season for every activity under the heavens”. And so it is with WPC Kindergarten as well. After 47 years of teaching and sharing God’s love with little ones Judy Hall has decided to take a well deserved break, and retire. Jennifer McKenzie has also decided to step down from her position at the end of this year. The three year old Preschool will remain open under Rose Marie’s supervision, however, WPC Kindergarten will close at the end of this year. Though we are sad this ministry will come to an end, we also want to rejoice and give thanks for all the many years of children in the halls of this church and the lasting impression of God’s love that they all carry with them in their hearts.
What a blessing it has been!
A Kindergarten Celebration planning group has been put in place to orchestrate ways for our church to praise God for this ministry and honor these faithful servants. As soon as details are available, we will share them with all of you.
Peace, Josie
