“Ask the animals, and they will teach you.” Job 12:7
While passing out meager rations of powdered milk during the Spanish Civil War, Indiana farmer Dan West was distraught when the milk ran out with children still waiting in line. He realized that they needed “not a cup, but a cow.” In 1944, this simple idea sparked the organization that is now Heifer International.
Heifer International, a renowned nonprofit organization, has created programs to create a powerful synergy between faith-based education and global outreach. Heifer’s mission is to end poverty and hunger while caring for the Earth. They work towards this goal by providing communities with livestock, training, and support to achieve sustainable economic independence.
By integrating Heifer International into our VBS curriculum, we will learn about global issues such as poverty, hunger, and environmental sustainability. We will gain insights into the challenges faced by marginalized communities worldwide and discover ways we can contribute to making a positive impact. It will give us the unique opportunity to engage in fun activities and learn about our faith while developing a sense of social responsibility. It also empowers us to make a tangible difference in the lives of others worldwide.
Our VBS this summer will be intergenerational and will include Bible recipients, music, arts and crafts, games, and community-building activities. It will aim to instill core Christian values such as love, compassion, and service to others. We will “Fluff a Sheep!” In other words, we will collect money to buy a sheep or two or three!
Instead of a week-long VBS, we will gather at 6:00 PM for supper on Wednesday nights June 21 and 28, July 12 and 19, and end with a cook-out on August 2. On June 21, we will learn all about chickens and seeds; sheep and goats will be our topic on June 28. On July 12 we will soak up knowledge about cows and bees! And we’ll end with learning about llamas and water.
Please join our WPC family and we will realize that while we are learning and playing together, we are actually helping others.
