In 1936, some Presbyterian ministers gathered to pray for the world which was headed in a direction of another war.
As these ministers talked and prayed, they realized the power of the the Lord’s Supper, instituted by Jesus with these twelve disciples, to unite all Christians everywhere. For in taking the bread and cup, Christians of all nations, all ethnic groups, all economic stations, all languages, Christians subscribing to all interpretations of scripture, of all denominations, and of all political affiliations, declare Jesus the the Lord of life and become the body of Christ living in the world. All divisions melt as we eat and drink with brother and sister the blood of Christ. From the handful of ministers, the first World Communion Sunday was organized and celebrated—a time for Christians everywhere to proclaim our unity in Christ at His table.
Prayer: God of Grace, as we take the bread and cup of Communion, fill us so that…through us the world that you love so much may drink of your love and peace. (Mission Yearbook, p 281)
